American Wire Gauge (AWG) yw'r ffordd safonol i ddynodi maint gwifren yng Ngogledd America.Yn AWG, po fwyaf yw'r nifer, y lleiaf yw diamedr a thrwch y wifren.Y maint safonol mwyaf yw 0000 AWG, a 40 AWG yw'r maint safonol lleiaf.Gellir ei alw hefyd yn fesurydd gwifren Brown & Sharpe neu'n syml yn fesurydd y wifren.
Mae AWG ar gyfer gwifren un llinyn, solet, crwn, dargludol trydanol.Fe'i cyflwynwyd gyntaf ym 1857 fel safon i ddisodli'r gwahanol fesuriadau a ddefnyddir gan wneuthurwyr gwahanol.Mae'r defnydd o rifau mwy sy'n dynodi gwifrau llai yn debyg i Standard Wire Gauge, a ddefnyddir ym Mhrydain.Mae'r rhan fwyaf o wledydd eraill yn defnyddio trawstoriad gwifren o safon fetrig ryngwladol mewn milimetrau sgwâr (mm2) a ddiffinnir yn y Comisiwn Electrotechnegol Rhyngwladol 60228.
Nid yw maint AWG yn cynnwys maint yr inswleiddio diogelu gwifren.
Diffinnir 0000 AWG fel 0.46 modfedd mewn diamedr, a diffinnir 36 AWG fel 0.005 modfedd mewn diamedr.Mae pob maint arall yn deillio fel camau logarithmig rhwng y ddau faint diffiniedig hyn.Mae yna 39 cam mesur rhwng y meintiau hyn, ac mae'r gymhareb yn 1-i-92 mewn diamedr.Felly, pob cam AWG yw'r 39ain gwreiddyn o 92, neu tua 1.12293 gwaith y newid mewn diamedr.
Gall gwifren mesurydd llai (maint mwy) ddargludo mwy o drydan yn ddiogel na gwifren mesurydd mwy (maint llai).Bydd lleihau maint AWG gwifren o dri yn dyblu arwynebedd trawsdoriadol gwifren ac yn dyblu faint o gerrynt y gall ei gario.Bydd newid maint yr AWG o 10 yn newid y trawstoriad ddeg gwaith.
Gan nad yw alwminiwm cystal o ddargludydd â chopr, ar gyfer cyfrifo faint o gerrynt y gall gwifren alwminiwm ei gario o'i gymharu ag un copr, ystyriwch ei fod yn AWG 2 fesurydd yn fwy.
